Welcome to Class CC

Mrs Champney

What are we learning this term?

In our first half term we were getting to know all abut each other whilst we settled in to Year 6 and we all successfully became prefects. Our topic last term was 'Space Invaders' and we were looking forward to the challenge of sending a teddy bear into Space! Alongside this we were looking at forces in science and the history of space travel. We were appreciating Holst's The Planet Suite and looked at Humanism, The Big Bang Theory and The Creation Story. Within English we created Non-Chronological Reports and studied visual Literacy using film clips as a stimulus. We had a busy and exciting half term.

The second half of the autumn term saw us  we completing the topic Shakespeare's School of Rock. We were looking at the significant events during the Tudor period and recognising differences between this time and today as well appreciating how the language created by shakespeare is evident in everyday language today. We  looked at Tudor theatre and in English studied some of Shakespeare's works. The children also looked at their own identity and produced some art to reflect this as well as studying portraiture. Finally our Christmas Upper School Production  ran alongside our studies where we   presented Disney's Peter Pan as our final product. We can't wait for our next topic to begin in the Arne year. Have a lovely Christmas holiday.

In January we begun our topic, "'Behind the bookcase', a study on World War 2. Throughout this topic we looked at life in Britain during this time and how and why war started and the consequences as a History focus.  Whilst In Geography we looked at the countries involved. Our RE focus was Judaism. We read the diary of Anne Frank as well as reading fiction based on war time. We especially enjoyed reading Nina Bawden's Carries War and Wiring for Anja by Michael Murpurgo. We took a fantastic trip to Duxford to the Imperial War Museum and created some Blitz art, as well as 'ration book' baking.

Last half term we looked at our topic on India, where we regognisedthe value of Namaste. Our topic tied in with the Holi Festival in March when we celebrated the festival of Colour in our own Holi Day, including an Indian Banquet, creating our own place mats using printing techniques and making Rangoli patterns using chalk drawings. We also looked at Hinduism and read Hindu stories alongside investigating the geographical location, environment and climate of India. Within our English we wrote newspaper reports as well as empathised with the poverty of India.

This half term sees us travelling to Saundersfoot in Wales. We have already become familiar with the route. As part of our Sports Relief efforts the whole school ran a mile each to take us on that journey, visiting sights (virtually) along the way. This half term we will plan out our trip and research the places we will visit as well as consider the geographical comparisons between Writtle and Saundersfoot. Additionally we will continue to study hard for our SATs in May.
