Welcome to Class SA

Miss Anderson

Miss Anderson is one half of the Year 4 team and loves working alongside Mrs Sheldon. She is very excited about all the fantastic topics she has planned for her new class and can't wait to get started! Miss Anderson is also the English Leader and has lots of fun activities planned for the whole school to enjoy, including World Book Day!

Class SA

This Half term our topic is ‘The Nutcracker’.

In English we will be identifying the features of play scripts in order to create our own version of The Nutcracker. We will read lots of plays so that we are familiar with the features and use ‘Talk for writing’ to understand the story of The Nutcracker.

We will then begin to plan and write our own versions of the Nutcracker, using adverbs within our stage directions, ready to perform later on in the term.

In English we will create a play script of The Nutcracker to use alongside our puppet shows. We will also study Michael Morpurgo's Coming Home.

In Design and Technology we will be designing and creating our own felt puppets. We will learn a variety of basic stitches in order to create our puppets and bring them to life. We will also create our very own scenery to use when performing our scripts towards the end of term. Through science we will learn about simple and parallel circuits and use lighting to compliment our scenery. We will also have the opportunity to speak to stage and prop managers to help us with our final puppet show performance.

To compliment our Nutcracker theme, we will study the composer Tchaikovsky, we will listen and appreciate his music and learn all about how an orchestra is structured. In PE we will use Tchaikovsky’s music to choreograph our own group dances.

In maths, we begin the half term by applying our addition and subtraction methods by looking at solving problems in contexts, deciding which operation to use and explaining why.

We then start a unit on multiplication and division and begin by revising our multiplication tables up to 12 x 12. We will use place value, known and derived facts to multiply and divide mentally, and then learn and practise using a formal written method to multiply 3-digit numbers by single-digit numbers, estimating answers first. Again we will finish the unit by applying our skills to solve problems involving multiplying, dividing, subtracting and adding, using the distributive law to multiply two digit numbers by one digit and integer scaling problems. As the festive period approaches we have a small unit on finding the area of rectilinear shapes by counting squares with a Christmassy theme!
